Groundworks are of great importance for all the types of projects that the STRI Group undertake. Professional earthworks require good construction design, thorough soil investigation and, depending on the complexity of the project, also a stability analysis. Typical groundworks include cut & fill works for sports plateaus, embankments, floodlighting foundations, ditches, excavation pits and backfill as well as suitable measures for improving the subsoil, such as soil replacement and soil improvement using suitable construction materials such as geosynthetics. Separating and filtering non-wovens as well as geogrids, woven fabrics, sealing membranes, drainage membranes and erosion control mats are widely used.
Groundworks form the critical foundation for any construction project, ensuring that the site is properly prepared to prevent future structural issues which can lead to additional costs further down the line and adhere to building standards and compliance.
Once the site is clear of vegetation or debris, excavation and earthworks can commence. This means digging to the required depth for foundations or utilities. Next, the removal of excess soil or adding fill material to level or raise the ground.
For utilities such as water, gas, and electrical lines, trenches need to be dug to install the necessary infrastructure.
Before laying the foundation, soil tests are conducted to determine the type of foundation needed. Once the excavation is complete, foundations are laid. The soil is compacted to ensure a stable base for the foundation.
It’s important to ensure that water does not pool on the surface and cause damage, and sub-surface drainage systems are installed correctly as to not affect the foundations.
We are experienced in delivering SuDS installations which manage rainwater run-off and 100 year storm events. Working alongside Group company the Environmental Protection Group means we have expert SuDS engineers in-house to support our work from a design perspective when required.
The ground will need to be levelled and free of any irregularities which may affect the site’s use. Next, the ground needs to be compacted which involves pressing down the soil to prevent settlement over time, ensuring the foundations are stable.
Temporary access roads and paths are often constructed for transporting materials and providing access to the construction site.
