What is involved in constructing a rugby pitch?

Let’s talk rugby pitch construction. Durability, drainage and dimensions are the fundamentals of a pitch, however, with the right contractor, it can take your pitch to an elite level without the additional expense. All pitches we install which are for professional or competitive use meet the standard of rugby governing bodies such as World Rugby. This ensures the pitches are at the highest standard and safe for players.

Plan and design

A rugby pitch must adhere to specific dimensions set by governing bodies. The field should be rectangular, with:

  • Length: 100 metres (playing area), plus 10-22 metres for each in-goal area (total: 120–144 meters).
  • Width: 70 metres (minimum).

Lines must be marked specifically for various sections and the orientation should ideally run from north to south to avoid the sun directly facing players.

Rugby pitch turf

Traditionally, most rugby matches are played on natural grass pitches. The quality of the turf is crucial, and the field should be level. We can advise on the specific grass type suitable for your location, which is resilient enough to withstand heavy foot traffic and contact.

Some pitches, especially those used for training, are built with hybrid or artificial turf, which is designed to mimic natural grass while providing durability for all weather conditions.

The ground must be excavated to remove any obstacles and ensure it is level. The surface should be compacted to prevent uneven settling. If you’re installing natural turf, we conduct soil tests to determine if the soil needs any modification (e.g., sand, clay, or organic matter).

drainage channel

Drainage and irrigation

Proper drainage is crucial to avoid waterlogging. This includes:

  • Subsurface drainage – using pipes or drains beneath the surface to carry away excess water.
  • Topsoil layer – ensures a solid foundation for the grass or turf.
  • Surface grading – to direct water towards drains.

How do you maintain a rugby pitch?

We can provide a 12-month strategy and maintenance plan following the completion of the project. We will ensure the pitches are withstanding any seasonal wear and tear, all year round. We can provide training for grounds teams to facilitate continuation of the maintenance strategy long after we have left. Being part of STRI Group, we have on hand expert agronomists who will be able to provide support and guidance on any turf related questions.

Ongoing maintenance includes:

  • Turf management: Mowing, aerating, scarifying, topdressing, and fertilisation
