Why is drainage important for schools?

Schools are experiencing more frequent flooding across the UK, leading to closures, building and property damage, and disrupted learning. With efficient and reliable drainage infrastructure in place, this addresses not only environmental sustainability, but health too.

SuDS will slow the flow of water which will keep the school, its pupils and grounds safe.

Drainage systems that complement traditional piped drainage include rain gardens, blue/green roofs, rainwater harvesting systems and permeable paving.  These solutions will improve water quality, enhance the environment, increase biodiversity and reduce water quantity on site, building a stable future of drainage which supports traditional drainage infrastructure simultaneously.

How can SuDS help to control climates?

Managing rainfall

SuDS reduce surface water runoff and the risk of flash flooding. Permeable paving, swales, rain gardens and planters allow for the water to be absorbed slowly, rather than pooling and overwhelming the drains.

vegetation and planted areas

Mitigating urban heat island effect

Incorporating blue/green roofs, vegetation and planted areas reduce temperatures during extreme heatwaves. The shade from plants and vegetation cools the area across school playgrounds, making this more comfortable when temperatures rise.

Enhancing the landscape

We work alongside engineers and landscape architects to construct SuDS that are not only compliant, but aesthetic to the surroundings.  Proven to improve mental health, greening spaces can reduce stress and be a positive education resource for pupils and the community.

Drought resilience

Over the summer months, hosepipe bans, and hot temperatures lead to reduced water consumption nationwide. SuDS incorporate rainwater harvesting systems which collect and store rainwater.  Grounds teams can use this for irrigation and aid in maintaining the playing fields or playing surfaces across the school.

How can SuDS benefit your school?

SuDS help manage the increasing impacts of climate change while offering valuable learning opportunities and improving the school environment. SuDS can reduce the risk of flooding, adding green spaces for students and staff members to enjoy. It’s a practical way to protect your school and involve students in real-world environmental action.

If you’re planning future improvements, now is a great time to explore SuDS. They can help your school stay prepared for extreme weather and build a safer, greener, and more inspiring place to learn.

Funding is available for schools through the Department for Education (DfE) on gov.uk.
