Project Summary

Increasing incidents of flooding across the UK has prompted councils to look for alternative ways to handle flood risk in schools. Installing SuDS not only helps to manage flood water, but it also provides an opportunity to educate children on water management, and aesthetically pleasing areas.

Carrick Construction was appointed by Hull Council to construct a retrofit SuDS scheme for Estcourt School. Working alongside 2B Landscaping Consultancy Ltd who provided the landscape design, and Group company the Environmental Protection Group, providing the engineering design, our objective was to attenuate the roof and ground water to SuDS planters, diverting and slowing the flow of water from the roof or tarmac, before it goes into drains.

Throughout the project we:

  • Implemented temporary areas and routes to working areas for smooth, organised movement. This included toilet and welfare facilities, all strategically located to ensure minimal disruption.
  • Coordinated and agreed the site logistics with Estcourt School to avoid specific periods which would impact the school staff and students. This involved traffic management, controlling material deliveries and distribution, and securing the area perimeter.
  • Formulated a bespoke environmental plan to mitigate the dust, noise and vibration levels to ensure the impact of construction works didn’t impact on the local community.
  • Protected the existing areas outside the scope of works by installing protective barriers, temporary boards and adhered to site cleanliness.
  • Preserved the environment to avoid damage to landscape features such as trees and hedgerows. We also consulted the local planning department to ensure no environmental issues pertained to the project.

Challenges

The access to the construction site was constricted and very tight due to where it was positioned in the school. Due to delivery schedules, we had to break down the project into two phases.

The Solution

We adapted our equipment for the works which included hand and power tools for detailed work and installations, and the use of mini diggers for the earthworks. We amended our timeline to combat the delivery scheduling, building for two weeks in August during the summer holidays, and for one more week in October half term to finalise the project.

THE RESULTS

This design and build project at Estcourt School, in collaboration with 2B Landscaping Consultancy Ltd and The Environmental Protection Group, was completed by our team efficiently, with the new rain garden, SuDS planters and drainpipe fixtures all installed and working effectively.

Funding is available to schools through the Department of Education website to encourage retrofit SuDS in schools as they are a recognised and proven way of reducing surface water, whilst educating and improving pupil’s environments.

Post-construction, we provided the school with our ‘Monitoring and Maintenance’ handbook which provides an insight into how to maintain and safely manage the site. It was a fantastic project to work on, and we’re delighted to see SuDS schemes being incorporated into schools.
